This shows an example of the "Electric Breadbin" being demonstrated. It is configured to provide both "floor drums"(pressure pads) plus 3 large push buttons to play guitar chords most music shops grit their teeth at. Adjacent to it is the "Typewriter" base station. This has a set up to play "finger drums". Alternatively, electronic drums can be played using a joystick. These devices were shown along a variety of other devices shown on this website at the National Museum of Computing, collectively under the name of Sound Bytes. Overview Called the "the Electric Breadbin" as it resembles the shape of the bread bin in my kitchen. It's function is that of a base station to be used with actuators. Operation The push buttons on the base station are primarily used for testing. Actuators, say for Chords "A", "G" and "F" are plugged into the appropriatly named 1/4 inch jack sockect Alternatly a joy stick can be plugged into one of the DIN sockets. THe are 8 chords available and 4 percussion sockets also. Code The device is powered by an Arduino micro-controller |

A range of actuators (switches, pressure pads, joysticks, push buttons etc,) can be plugged into the sockets on the rear panel). The buttons on the base station are primarily used for testing.) On the lower front can be found the amplifier control (level and tone). The left hand rotary switch changes the percussion instruments. The rotary switch changes the instruments used by the chords. |

A pair of 15cm speakers were used (8 ohm, 15 Watts RMS). In practice the size and power od speakers has proved adequate in most situations. N.B. The "Bread Bin" has a line out facility allowing an external amplifier to be used. |

| The amplifiers used will work with a supply range of 8v to 16v. This allows operation from a wide range of DC power sources. 12v is used typically as the Arduino microcontroller can alos be supplied with 12v. | ![]() |
