Sound Wire Mk1

Narrative

This music machine came about after being contacted by NMPAT. They had built a music machine that repurposed a gaming interface (for playing indoor golf) to be create an accessible music instrument. The interface software created at Goldsmiths college can be seen via a YouTube demo of Sound Control. The golf controller interface could no longer be sourced. Could a music machine with similar functionality be created?

After a conversation with a retired formula one engineering designer, it was decided to employ the use of a draw wire displacement sensor. This was configured in the software to detect a range of 0v to 5v in increments of 1/10th of a volt. This was then converted into a MIDI signal that gave an audio signal of 15 pentatonic scale notes. Dependent on how far out the wire is pulled.

The Tone-Wire hardware consists of a 9v battery holder, an on off switch and a rotary switch to provide sound variations. In the foreground you can see the Arduino Leonardo, a Sparkfun Music Instrument Sheild (MIDI synth) and the draw wire displacement sensor. These are what make up the internal electronics

The "O" grip is made from a sawn-off drainpipe and squash racket grip tape. Adding in the wooden top increases the weight to counteract the pull of the draw wire displacement sensor (2Nm).
